Master of Arts in Education (Counselor Education)

  • Become a school counselor — and help students bring balance to their complex lives.

Students are impacted by more than what happens in the classroom. This exciting time of life can bring with it personal, social and academic pressure, and at times students can feel overwhelmed, wondering how to move forward. With a Master of Arts in Education (Counselor Education) from Capital, you can serve as a trusted guide and help them achieve academic and personal success during their journey of self-discovery. Our graduate counselor program will prepare you to play a vital role in helping them make sense of their world inside and outside of school. Designed for working professionals, our unique program combines the convenience of online courses and on-campus classes with personal interaction with your professors and your faculty adviser.

Through coursework that merges theory and best practices taught by highly respected professionals in the field, you can obtain the requisite knowledge and understanding you need to reach, advise and counsel today’s diverse, socially wired student population. And through the program’s school counseling practicum and school counseling internship, you’ll be putting your training and research to work where it matters — in real schools with real students. Your course of study culminates in a Capstone Research Project designed in concert with your faculty adviser and reflecting your professional interests, goals and aspirations.

If you’re interested moving from the classroom or changing careers altogether, you can obtain an MAEd in School Counseling in as few as two years. And you don’t need an undergraduate degree in teaching to enroll, but can gain entry with a bachelor’s degree from any accredited institution of higher education. As a graduate of the program, you will be eligible for licensure as a Professional School Counselor by the Ohio Department of Education and will be prepared to work in public and private K-12 educational settings.
